Action of active substances Ginseng Ginseng grows in East Asia and South America. It is thought that ginseng was found in China 5000 years ago. At the beginning ginseng was used for food but very soon it was noticed that it had stress relieving and adaptogenic qualities. It can increase physical activity and decrease fatigue. Ginseng is called a rejuvenating and an energizing plant. The root of ginseng is valuable and often used in folk medicine. Ginseng contains volatile oils, microelements, enzymes, C and B group vitamins, phytoestrogens, sugars, pectins and other substances. The treating quality is determined by 29 ginsenosides, known as triterpene saponines. Triterpene saponines help to fight stress, fatigue and have adaptogenic, anesthetic, antiinflammatory and anticonvulsant qualities. It helps to control blood sugar and cholesterol concentrations and blood pressure. For thousands of years ginseng has been used as an aphrodisiac. It increases physical and sexual activity. Ginseng extract is the stimulator of sexual function. It strengthens the reproductional system, eliminates the unpleasant symptoms of andropause, stimulates spermatogenesis and treats impotence. Latest trials determined that ginseng improved central and peripheral blood circulation. It acts as a vasodilatator, improves blood circulation in male sexual organs and increases erection. Ginseng improves the function of adrenal glands, increases the production of the adrenal and sexual hormones. It increases libido and improves the state and functioning of sexual organs. Ginseng acts like an adaptogen and helps men fight the stress and anxiousness and activates the sexual system.
Turmeric Curcumin, the active substance of turmeric has blood circulation regulating qualities and acts like an aphrodisiac. Curcumin has an anticancer effect and can reduce the proliferation of prostate cancer cells and slow down the progress of cancer. (Prostate. 2001 Jun 1;47(4): pp.293-303)
Zinc Zinc, which is useful for the normal functioning of prostate, can be found in the tissue of prostate. It is proved that zinc participates in the metabolism of androgens, inhibits the enzyme responsible for the conversion of dihidrotestosterone into testosterone. It inhibits the selection of prolactin, regulates the testosterone blood concentration, the amount and activity of spermatozoids and improves the functioning of prostate.
Phytosterols Phytosterols are natural components of plants cells membrane. They were discovered in the year 1922. Clinical trials lasting for 45 years determined that phytosterols were safe and caused no side effects. Phytosterols are useful in case of enlarged prostate because they have anti-inflammatory qualities and effectively decrease the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and leucotriens. Phytosterols decrease the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia, inhibit the conversion of dihidrotestosterone into testosterone and the binding of testosterone to androgenic receptors. It decrease the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins, improve urine stream, decrease the intumescence of prostate tissue and residual urine volume, stop the hair loss and stimulate the growth of new hair. The better functioning of prostate improves the quality of life, strengthens the libido and has a positive effect on sexual function.
Octacosanol Octacosanol increases physical endurance. The data of clinical trials show that octacosanol improves sexual activity because it has an ability to increase libido. Octacosanol increases the testosterone blood concentration (testosterone is a male sex hormone). Testosterone regulates libido and sexual function.
Scientific researches demonstrating the efficiency * During one study 45 men with erectional dysfunction were administered ginseng extract and placebo for 8 weeks. The treatment was discontinued for 2 weeks and continued again for 8 more weeks. Erection improved in the group that received ginseng extract compared with placebo.60% of men announced that the erectional function improved during the ginseng extract administration period. The blood testosterone concentration remained the same and scientists came to the conclusion that the improvement of erectional function was caused by ginseng, not by changes of hormones concentration. Furthermore, ginseng stimulates the nervous system that plays a special role in sexual function. ( 1/2/03 - Healthnotes Newswire—Men experiencing sexual difficulties due to inability to achieve erection may be helped by Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng), according to a study published in the Journal of Urology (2002;168:2070–3). * On 1997 Yale university professor Conn announced that ginseng stimulates the secretion of NO. NO stimulates vasodilatation, controls blood pressure and protects organism from the formation of blood clot. NO cause smooth muscles relaxation and improves the blood flow. An increased blood flow into men’s sex organs improves the erection. (Gillis CN. Panax ginseng pharmacology: a nitric oxide link? Biochem Pharmacol 1997 Jul;54(1):1-8.) * Clinical trials held at Hamilton university determined that ginseng contains active substances that act as vasodilatators (dilate blood vessels, improve the blood flow into pelvis and sexual organs, stimulate the production of testosterone). * In traditional Chinese medicine millions of men have been using ginseng for more than 5000 years. Not so long ago scientific researches determined that ginseng can increase sexual endurance for elderly people, treat impotence and increase the amount and agility of spermatozoids. (The American Journal of Chinese Medicine). Phytosterols * Multicenter double-blind placebo controlled study with 117 patients involved revealed that after 6 months administration of phytosterols for prostate hyperplasia, the symptoms caused by prostate adenoma decreased, the urine stream increased and the life quality improved. These positive effects remained 18 months after discontinuation of phytosterols treatment. (Department of Urology, Ruhr-University of Bochum, Herne, Germany). * Data of double-blind placebo controlled study show that the condition of 177 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia improved after the 6 months administration of phytosterols. The results were statistically reliable (P<0.01). (Department of Urology, Allgemeines Krankenhaus Celle, Academic Hospital, Germany) * Research involving 519 men with enlarged prostate announced that phytosterols are effective in improving the urinary function, increasing urine stream, decreasing urine residual volume, prostaglandins concentration, intumescence of prostate tissue and in inhibiting the proliferation of prostate epithelium.
