Action of active substances

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) comes from China, Japan and Korea. Today Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) has reached and is spread in Europe as well. Ginkgo biloba extract is made from desiccated Ginkgo biloba leaves. Active substances of Ginkgo biloba extract are ginkgolides, bilobalide, glycosides, biflavonoids, proanthocyanidine, organic acids, carotenoids, wax, vitamin C. Ginkgo biloba extract is used widely in treatment of various circulatory disorders. The substances in Ginkgo biloba extract have the antioxidative properties, decrease the aggregation of thrombocytes, help to prevent circulatory disorders in whole organism, improves the performance of the brain and nervous system, protect nerve cells from various harmful factors and regulate tonicity and elasticity of the blood vessels. Ginkgo biloba extract also improves memory, attention and alertness, relieves depressive mood state, improves limb circulation, controls blood vessels tonicity and elasticity. Administration of Ginkgo biloba extract for 2-3 months significantly improves hearing, cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer disease, the general status of patients with intermittent claudication, brain is better supplied with oxygen.
Vitamins C, E, selenium are antioxidants. They enhance the effect of the Ginkgo biloba extract, improves mental activity, slower the progression of the Alzheimer disease in middle age and elderly people.
B group vitamins are involved in metabolism. They improve the performance of the nervous system.
Magnesium is involved in muscle function, activates the fermentation systems of the organism cells, normalize blood pressure and cardiac rhythm, improves metabolism.

Scientific researches demonstrating the efficiency

* Patients with depression received antidepressants, Ginkgo biloba extract and placebo. The symptoms were evaluated according to Hamilton Depression Rating Scale in 2 months. The symptoms of depression improved significantly in Ginkgo biloba group; placebo group did not show such results. (Schubert H, Halama P. Depressive episode primarily unresponsive to therapy in elderly patients: efficacy of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) in combination with antidepressants. Geriatr Forsch 1993;3:45-53.)
* Warburton (1988) reviewed the results of 20 clinical trials. It was determined that this extract may be useful in treatment of dementia, organic brain damage, depression and mood impairment.
* In USA 1997 JAMA journal published randomized double blind placebo controlled multicentral 52 weeks study with 202 patients with Alzheimer disease. They received 120 mg of standardized Ginkgo biloba extract and it was noticed that cognitive functions and social adaptation of the patients improved.
* Double blind placebo controlled study in Germany showed that memory and concentration of the patients with Alzheimer disease improved significantly after the administration of 240 mg Ginkgo biloba extract for 3 months.
* Long-term study in Germany determined that standardized Ginkgo biloba extract prolonged the ability to walk without pain for the patients with intermittent claudication. (DeFeudis, 1991; Schneider, 1992).
* USA experimental research showed that Ginkgo biloba extract improves blood circulation, neutralizes free radicals, may be useful in treatment of retinal degeneration, diabetic neuropathy and glaucoma. (Doly et al., 1986; DeFeudis, 1991; Baudouin et al., 1999; Chung et al., 1999)
* Auditory organs are sensible to oxygen deficiency and other harmful factors. Ginkgo biloba extract improves the hearing in case of cochlear neuritis. (Bascher et al, 1988) and protects from ototoxic side effect of some antibiotics. (Jung et al., 1998). Tinnitus due to impaired circulation often troubles elderly people. Ginkgo biloba extract effectively helps to reduce this symptom. (Meyer et al., 1988).
